CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Digby drifted on wings of leathery black flesh as the desert passed by beneath him. It was good to get away from Vegas for a bit. Thinking back, he’d barely been left alone for days. If it wasn’t Parker keeping an eye on him, it was someone else looking to him for leadership.

Sometimes a necromancer needed to get away from it all.

It wasn’t like he wanted to be in charge anyway. No, it had just happened. The only person he’d been able to depend on had been Rebecca, but with her missing, he was doing it all alone. He shook his head, annoyed with himself for feeling inadequate.

“I can do this.” Digby flapped the large bat wings that extended from his back. Everyone else doubted him; he couldn’t afford to do the same thing himself. “I just need more strength.”

He cringed as he looked around, half expecting Ames to be floating beside him to tell him he was wrong or insane, or both. The ghost didn’t appear. Apparently, his madness knew well enough not to manifest a flightless corpse in the sky.

Asher cawed happily as she flapped her wings not far behind him, helping him to forget about his problems for a moment. Digby could feel her excitement across their bond. She was thrilled to be able to share the sky with him. He could understand that much. The freedom of it certainly held an appeal. A part of him just wanted to keep flying and never look back.

Unfortunately, there was still so much to do, and far too many enemies to fight.

Digby tucked his wings, letting himself plummet toward the ground as a city came into view. He extended them again a moment later to catch the wind. Asher dove to catch up. They hadn’t gone far. Just thirty miles, give or take, from Vegas to a city called Boulder. There was something about the simplicity of the name that appealed to him.

More importantly, Asher hadn’t flown out to the city yet during her search for more zombies. With a little luck, he could find some of the dead to add to his horde. If not, there were sure to be plenty of revenants that could be eaten or converted into minions.

He checked his resources.
